Sections
The PSA Photojournalism Division offers two dual projection sections for the 2009 PSA International:

      (1) Open section
      (2) Human Interest section

All entries in each section must conform to the Photojournalism Definition given below.
All entries in the Human Interest section must conform to the Photojournalism Definition give below and the Human Interest Definition given below.

Entry Fees

Digital Entry Fees
World Wide      -  $5 US for 1 section  or  $7 US for both sections

Slide Entry Fees
United States   -   $7 US for 1 slide section  or  $10 US for both slide sections
Other               - $10 US for 1 slide section  or  $14 US for both slide sections

An entry consists of 4 digital files in a section or 4 four slides in a section. You cannot submit both digital files and slides to the same section. You may submit all slides to one section and all digital files to the other section; however this will be considered a split entry and you must pay the appropriate single section fee for each section.

Entries will be judged in 4 rounds. Any entry without paid entry fees at the time of judging will not be judged. IRC's are not an acceptable form of payment.

Catalog

An on-line 8½"x11" PDF Exhibition Catalog for all sections in the Division is included with your entry fee. A link will be included on the Exhibition Web Site so you can email the Catalog to yourself and save as an electronic file and/or print out. This is the same Catalog that will be provided to the Division Star Ratings Director and includes color reproductions of the medal winning images.

Photojournalism Definition

Photojournalism entries shall consist of pictures or sequences with informative content and emotional impact, including human interest, documentary and spot news. The journalistic value of the photograph must be considered over the pictorial quality. In the interest of credibility, photographs that misrepresent the truth, such as manipulation to alter the subject matter, or situations which are set up for the purpose of photography, are unacceptable in Photojournalism competition. No pictorial elements may be moved, cloned, added, deleted, rearranged or combined. No manipulation or modification is permitted except resizing, cropping, selective lightening or darkening, sharpening, and restoration of original color to the scene. Any adjustments must appear natural.

Human Interest Definition

Human Interest is defined as an image depicting a person or persons in an interactive, emotional or unusual situation, excluding sports action.

Titles

Titles will not be read aloud during judging. Please limit titles to 35 characters including spaces and punctuation. The Entry Form software will clip any excess characters resulting in an incomplete title that could cause you problems when applying for a star rating.

Borders

Borders are allowed for digital photojournalism images but are not recommended. If you do use a border, we recommend you limit it to a thin stroke that separates the image area from the black projection background. Wide borders and decorative borders that draw attention from the photojournalism story are discouraged and could hurt your scores.

Color Space

Using sRGB color space for your .jpg files is recommended as it will provide better quality under the projection conditions used for judging the exhibition and producing the exhibition show. Do not use CMYK color space. CMYK images will not project correctly during judging.

Digital Images

Maximum digital image width (horizontal) is 1024 pixels. Maximum digital image height (vertical) is 768 pixels.

Images larger in either dimension will be rejected by the entry software.

Smaller images are acceptable but place you at a disadvantage.

Save your .jpg images using the maximum image quality of 9 and no large than 850k.

Slides

All slides must be in 2x2 inch mounts. Slide mounts must bear the name and address of the entrant, the title of the image and a number (1-4) to correspond to the Slide Entry Form. The mount must have a prominent thumb spot in the lower left corner as properly hand viewed to assure proper orientation during projection.

File Names

You do not have to follow any naming convention for your .jpg files when you enter. The on-line entry form will properly rename your files to meet the needs of our exhibition software.

We recommend saving your .jpg images in a special folder on your computer using the image title as the file name. That will make it easier to pick the correct image when using the Entry Form browser to attach your images.

Submitting Entries

Digital Images
All digital files must be submitted On-Line using the Digital Entry Form. After you have carefully read these "information and instructions", and after double checking to make sure your files are no larger than 1024 pixels wide and no larger than 768 pixels high, click here to fill out the Digital Entry Form, attach your files and submit them. Digital entries on CD via postal mail will not be accepted.

Slides
All slides must conform with the slide requirements in these instructions and the General Conditions and Rules below. Prior to mailing your slides, you must complete the Slide Entry Form. After you have carefully read these "Information and Instructions", click here to fill out the Slide Entry Form and email it to yourself to print out and include with the slides. You will receive a separate email Slide Entry Form for each slide section you enter. The package containing your slides must have a copy of each Slide Entry Form and must be mailed to the address indicated on the Entry Form. Slides will be returned reusing the same packages in which they were submitted.

Status List

After you submit your electronic entry, you will receive an email with your name, address, email, etc. plus the image titles you typed in. Please review and if you made any errors, please contact the Dual Projection Chairman by clicking jkarai@hotmail.com to resolve.

Click Here To Review The Entry Status List - The entries are processed periodically and the status report indicates the time/date of the last status list update and the next scheduled status list update. It takes longer for slide status to be included on the Entry Status List so please be patient.

If any problems are noted in the status list, please contact the Dual Projection Chairman by clicking jkarai@hotmail.com to resolve.

General Conditions and Rules
Maker's Name: The maker's name and/or image title shall not be in the image area or in any other area visible to the judges of any digital files, slides or prints.

Original Image Statement: Entries must originate as photographs (image-captures of object via light sensitivity) made by the entrant on photographic emulsion or acquired digitally. By virtue of submitting an entry, the entrant certifies the work as his/her own and permits the sponsors to reproduce all or part of the entered material free of charge for publication and/or display in media related to the exhibition. This may include use in a 2010 PSA Calendar or low resolution posting on a web site. The exhibition assumes no liability of any misuse of copyright. All final work must be on photographic film, digital file, on photographic print material or digital print material, mounting excepted.

Previously Accepted Images: An image previously accepted in any PSA International Photojournalism Division section, regardless of media, is not eligible for entry in any Photojournalism Division section of the 2009 PSA International.

Duplicate Images: The same image may not be submitted in more than one Nature Section of the 2009 PSA International regardless of the media. This means images submitted in either Nature Dual Projection section may not be submitted in the other Nature Dual Projection section nor in either of the Nature Print sections. Please note: Different images using the same title will be considered the same image.

Emails: Entry confirmation for on-line entries, filled-in Slide Entry Forms for printing and including with your slide entries, and Report Cards will be sent to entrants via email from the Chairman Email Address above. Please be sure that this email address has been included in your "safe" email addresses to assure receipt of these emails instead of having them blocked by your security system.

Exhibition Is Open: The exhibition is open to anyone; however, an entry may be rejected when the sponsoring organization or its agent, in its reasonable discretion, believes the entry does not conform to the exhibition rules and conditions.
