Nature Definition

Nature photography is restricted to the use of the photographic process to depict observations from all branches of natural history, except anthropology and archeology, in such a fashion that a well informed person will be able to identify the subject material and to certify as to its honest presentation. The story telling value of a photograph must be weighed more than the pictorial quality. Human elements shall not be present, except on the rare occasion where those human elements enhance the nature story. The presence of scientific bands on wild animals is acceptable. Photographs of artificially produced hybrid plants or animals, mounted specimens, or obviously set arrangements, are ineligible, as is any form of manipulation that alters the truth of the photographic statement. No pictorial elements may be moved, cloned, added, deleted, rearranged or combined. No manipulation or modification is permitted except resizing, cropping, selective lightening or darkening, sharpening, and restoration of original color to the scene. Any adjustments must appear natural.

NOTE: Human elements are not limited to people in the image. Artifacts made by humans, such as roads, fences, signs, hay bales and buildings, are also considered human elements.

Wildlife Definition

Authentic wildlife is defined as one or more organisms living free and unrestrained in a natural or adopted habitat. Therefore, photographs of zoo or game farm animals are not eligible for submitting in the Wildlife section.

NOTE: Wildlife subjects are not limited to birds and mammals. Insects, reptiles, amphibians, sea creatures and botany are also eligible wildlife subjects as long as they are not captive subjects. The main subjects must be living organisms therefore Landscapes are not eligible wildlife subjects.

Wildlife Section

Titles

Descriptive titles are recommended. Titles will be read aloud during judging so incorrectly identified subjects can hurt your score. Please limit titles to 35 characters including spaces and punctuation. The Entry Form software will clip any excess characters resulting in an incomplete title that could cause you problems when applying for a star rating.

Black & White

Black & White prints are allowed in Nature. Black & White prints must be monochrome with no colors. Infrared prints are not allowed in Nature.

Image Size

Prints may not exceed 20 inches in the longest dimension nor 16 inches in the shortest dimension. Smaller prints are acceptable.

Submitting Entries

Prior to shipping your prints you must complete the on-line Print Entry Form. This filled-in form must be mailed with the prints to the address indicated on the Entry Form. After you have carefully read these "information and instructions", click here to fill out the Print Entry Form and email it to yourself to print it out to include with the prints. You will receive a separate email for each section you enter. Both must be included with your prints if you enter both sections.

A check box is provided on the Print Entry Form to give permission to destroy the prints after the Exhibition. Entrants giving this permission must sign the emailed Entry Form and can pay fees based on the Non-Return Fees above. All other entrants must pay fees based on the Return Fees above.

All prints must be shipped unmounted and flat regardless the country of origin. Stiffeners are recommended to prevent damage during shipping. Mounted prints will not be judged and will not be returned. Unless you elected the Non-Return option, prints should be packaged so the shipping materials can be reused to return the prints to you.

Status List

Click Here To Review The Entry Status List - The entries are processed periodically and the status report indicates the time/date of the next scheduled status list up. It takes longer for print status to be included on the Entry Status List so please be patient.

General Condition and Rules
Maker's Name: The maker's name and/or image title shall not be in the image area, or in any other area visible to the judges, of any digital files, slides or prints. Only pressure sensitive labels may be used on the backs of unmounted prints to prevent bleed-through of the ink.

By virtue of submitting an entry, the entrant certifies the work as his/her own and permits the sponsors to reproduce all or part of the entered material free of charge for publication and/or display in media related to the exhibition. This may include low resolution posting on a web site. The exhibition assumes no liability of any misuse of copyright. All final work must be on photographic film, digital file, on photographic print material or digital print material, mounting excepted.

This means images submitted in either Nature Print section may not be submitted in the other Nature Print section nor in either of the Nature Dual Projection sections. Please note: Different images using the same title will be considered the same image.

Emails: Filled-in Print Entry Forms and Report Cards will be sent to entrants via email from the Chairman Email Address above.
